The winter Steelhead season is in full swing. With the holidays almost past us it’s a great time to plan a trip to the Salmon River in Pulaski New York in early 2009. Fishing is what we do here in upstate New York on the Famed Salmon River through the winter months.

Fishing with a guide in a heated drift boat is a great way to see the river and things you just wouldn’t see from your office. Find a friend who enjoys fishing and the chance to catch the fish of a lifetime and start making plans to head to the area for and exciting trip down the Salmon River.

We fish several different methods to catch steelhead through the winter. Fist tactic is bottom bouncing, using conventional spinning gear we cast in the various runs and pools that hold Steelhead throughout the winter using eggs baits or yarn flies. This is a vary productive way of enticing the Steelhead to bite.

Fly fishing would be the next tactic used to fish Steelhead. This technique we would cast small nymph patterns and egg imitation flies through the tail out of the deeper pools to catch Steelhead. Some soft tackle flies and streamers work well at this time as well.

Float fishing is another very effective way to fish in the winter for Steelhead. The deeper slower water is fished with egg sacs or Trout Beads along with Berkley Power Worms to produce some action. Either center pin or conventional spinning gear is best suited for this style of fishing. The center pin is the deadliest technique to make it to the area in a long time. Center pin fishing allows you to present the bait in the most natural way possible and their is no drag on the reel so it’s entirely up to the angler to fight the fish instead of the reel doing all the work.

Plugging from the boat using diving rattling plugs to produce strikes is very popular among veteran guides along the Salmon River. This time of year some of the longer slower runs are best fished using plugs to cover more water. Luhr Jensen Hot Shots seem to be the bait of choice this time of year.

It’s all about getting outdoors in the winter instead of dealing with cabin fever. Try it for a memorable experience.
