Conventional Fishing Reel
What is the “clicker” for on my Avet JX conventional reel?
I just bought my first conventional reel an avet jx and was wondering what the “clicker” is used for. I am a newb with these type of reels since I have been fishing spin casting reels all my life.
Avets are generally used for strong offshore fish like tuna and yellowtail, which are generally fished with live bait out of Southern California and Baja.
Most of the time you’re fishing you’ll be waiting for a bite, holding your outfit with the reel in freespool, feeding out line as the bait swims and your thumb keeping the spool from spinning out line too fast and backlashing. When a fish bites, it’ll take off faster, you’ll put the reel in gear and set the hook.
The clicker is used to keep the line from coming out too easily if you have to put the rod down. If a fish chooses that moment to bite, it’ll start pulling out line against the clicker, you’ll pick up the rod and hook the fish. If the reel was in freespool, the line would spin out too fast and backlash (tangle) and the fish would pull the rod overboard (I’ve seen it happen), and if you left the reel in gear, the same thing would happen quicker (I’ve seen that, too).
If you’re trolling, you leave the reel in gear in the holder or strapped to the rail with the drag set and the clicker on, as an alarm. But an Avet JX is a bit small for offshore trolling.
It’s also used in the same way if you’ve got the rod in a holder while pier or surf fishing, but I don’t think you’d use an Avet for that.
Anyway, except for trolling I very rarely use the clicker on any reel.
